Drawing Frisk From Undertale

Warning this contains spoilers read with caution!

Undertale by Toby Fox is a role-playing game (rpg) you download from a website called "Steam" to play on your laptop or computer and take part in an adventure where you the player do not have to kill anyone! The person you play as is a human child that you find out is called Frisk that gets mistaken for the name you give it like Chara for example, who happens to be the first fallen human child in the underground.

You take part in a game full of monsters in the underground trying to escape either by using mercy or fighting. Here are some tips on how to draw Frisk the human!

Basic Information

When you open up the game and see who you play as its a bit of a shock. You have no dialogue just phrases you read when you encounter monsters like *( You played in the leaves. It fills you with DETERMINATION). You also have no idea how old you are, what your race is, or what your gender might be is so this leaves many to intemperate who Frisk might be.
There have been many artists who have made Frisk exactly like the sprite, made them different races, different outfits and so on. What I am going to suggest is to make their gender neutral or even nonbinary because the creator of the game never stated their pronouns or even what they identify as. Despite the game giving many character's pronouns like Asgore for example, the king of the underground.

so when giving Frisk pronouns in your drawing I suggest sticking with they/them since the game and creator himself haven't said what they might be gender wise.

When it comes to age like stated before its unknown but they are a child and many characters in the game say this. So if you want to make them older, as in 17+, thats fine just know that in the game Frisk is a kid.

Now that you know the basics about who Frisk is its time to find reference images!

Reference Images

Like any art image you want to create its important to have something to look at when you want to draw something. I suggest looking at official images first from the website Undertale or even going to Google and searching "Frisk undertale sprite"
Many helpful images will show up I personally love using official work the most but its alright to use other art to gain inspiration!

I used this image to help me view Frisk at different view points compared to Chara, the first child to fall into the underground.

Once you find images that help you when drawing its time to get started!

Starting The Sketch

When drawing people I use a circle like method as stated in previous posts but there are different ways to draw people. Find a way that works best for you and that is how you will start with the basic outline for Frisk.

Use a pencil and an erasure and lightly sketch out the basic human features. Draw a circle like head with a vertical line going straight down the circle and a horizontal line going across the vertical line. It should end up almost looking like a "t" or maybe a cross.

Once you got the basic for the head shape connect it to a neck. Have the lines be curved and connected to the shoulders.
Do a similar process with the body by using oval and circular lightly draw sketches to represent body parts. Having the shoulder be connected to a long thin oval for the arm, a small circle for the elbow, another thin oval thats not as long for the other part of the arm and circles not smaller than the elbow as a hand.

It should be similar to something like this once you finish doing this process.

When you are doing lightly drawing the body its time to outline it.

Outlining

Take your pencil now and make the lines a bit more bolder than the ones you created to have a basic body sketch. You can use the same pencil as before but give it a bit more of a push to make the lines darker for this process.

Go over the head for example and give it a more defined look, meaning make it look more like a head rather than just a circle on a stick. Erase the lines as you go and make the body more of a body and less like sticks and circles mashed together.

You also can add the clothes you want Frisk to wear along with drawing if you want their eyes to be open or not. For my drawing I chose to have their eyes shut so I made a curve eyes to make it seem like they are happy when I drew their expression smiling.

You can also go over the facial and body features with a black pen to make things stand out more. When you are done with that its time to color it in!

Coloring

Like I said before Frisk's skin up to whatever you chose it to be. Yellow is a default color and no race is given in the game so if you want to draw them as white, black, asian, etc its up to you! I made my drawing similar to me so I went with Frisk being white.

coloring the face

The colors I used are:
  • peach
  • light pink
  • tan
  • brown
  • dark brown
  • black
all are basic colors from a crayola color pencil box.

The peach is used for their main skin tone while blending it in with light pink on areas such as their cheeks and lightly on their nose to make it seem like they are more human and childish. For shadows I very lightly used a tan color under the neck and where their hair falls on their face. This will make sure the head and hair are defined and to make it seem like those things are not just stuck to their face.

The black I used for their eyes and eyelashes.

Brown was for the basic color filled in for the hair and eyebrows and the dark brown was to give added in to make its seem like it wasn't just one solid color.

coloring the clothes

sticking with crayola colored pencils I used
  • medium blue
  • dark blue
  • pink
  • purple
  • light blue
  • turquoise
  • black
  • yellow
for the sweater I shaded in with a medium blue than went over it with the dark blue and shaded more around the shoulders to make it seem hair was above the shoulders forming a shadow.

The stripes I stared lightly with a pink then went over top with a purple till I got a color close to the one in the pixel art.

I drew the shorts with a light blue and turquoise and used a medium blue to outline it along with shading in where the thighs are.

then I colored in their boots with a yellow to make it look like they are wearing yellow rain boots and finally colored their legs black not too hard but just enough to make it look like they have tights on.

Finishing Touches

When everything is almost done you can add little details like lines on the sweater to make it appear to be wrinkles. Adding curved lines on the side of the shorts to look like pockets is another thing. Or even going and adding stray hairs to make its look like its blowing in the wind. I added a turquoise bandaid on the nose just to add a little something cute.

Overall once you finished doing things like that and coloring in the fingers with a peach color you are done!

Final Product

And you are done drawing your Frisk! Here is mine!

like I said before this is just one way to draw Frisk there are many ways to draw them! Here are other drawings I have made of them before each are slightly different!

So dont be afraid you want to draw Frisk in a different way! How you want to view what they look like is up to you.

Have fun drawing and stay determined!

How To Draw The Crystal Temple

Steven Universe is a show filled with a colorful cast and backgrounds but the one background that shows up in almost every episode is Steven's home the Temple.  From the pilot episode till now the Crystal Temple has been there since the beginning. So as something as beautiful and mysterious, here is how I created the Crystal Temple aka the Temple Gem.

Getting Started

When looking for how to draw the temple you need to look at many images and angles till you find the right one. I chose the image above as a reference point on how I want my art to look in the end.

At first drawing this might seem confusing or even difficult but that shouldn't stop you! Here are a few tips when creating this giant woman.
  • Know how many arms are there
  • Notice the shadows / lighting
  • Count of how many eyes, noses, and mouths are there
  • Treat as if its a person
The Temple has 8 arms because its meant to be a fusion with the major Crystal Gems (Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, Rose Quartz) but some of the hands are missing to give it an older look / feel. Many are in the sand so keep that in mind!

How you draw the source of light will give it a realistic effect too so be mindful on what color scheme you chose to go with! I stuck with the image above so I used natural colors.

Keeping in mind how many facial features there are will make it easier on where to place things and not stressing if you forget a nose or a mouth!

Lastly the Gem is a fusion but treat it as a person when drawing it! Use a method right for you and lightly sketch it out as if you are drawing a human first not a background!

Reference Images

As I stated before, creating the temple isn't the easiest thing to do but looking at what you are drawing will help greatly!

Thankfully the official show and its crew members have given us plenty to work with!

Note how large the temple is to other buildings and how its attached to a hill side. How there are small rocks and parts of the temple fallen off and into the beach sand!

Pay attention to the tiny details of the lumps of moss and grassy parts!

When drawing the hair notice how its similar to Rose Quartz so be sure to make it seem curly/wavy!

Drawing The Temple

Now that you have a basic understanding on how it looks its time to lightly sketch out the hill and the temple!

First have a base line for where the hill will stand on. Then make a curve for it to seem like a hill large enough to fit the light house on top along with the temple to be stuck to.

Now lightly do your drawing method on how you make people! I use the circle method as I stated in past posts. So feel free to use that one!

With a pencil lightly draw out the body shapes (head, torso, arms, hand) and lines in the inside of the hill to make it seem like there are rocks.

Again make sure too look at your reference picture as you draw!

Making The Sky

The sky in Steven Universe is full of magic! From bright cool colors to warm and comforting. For this again search for a reference image if you wish to change its look/color.

I use the same image for my sky but there are many options to chose from! Here are just a few examples!

when you chose a sky lightly sketch out the the clouds, sparkles, stars, and streaks for the clouds to make it seem similar to Steven Universe's style.

Coloring

Once you sketch everything out its time to color! I use simple crayola colored pencils and basic acrylic paint and water colors. All things you could find at a local art&craft store or at a Walmart!

Start coloring the body very lightly and as you continue go back and make it darker. Make sure to make it darker in lines where the stones are going to be to make it seem more like a stone.

Colors I used are:
  • brown
  • dark brown
  • golden brown
  • tan
  • light green
  • dark green
  • green
These will be the basic colors for the Temple along with the grass/moss!

Once you are finished your outcome should be similar to this
again its important to line some things out such as the hair curls, gem stones, eyes, and lips! Don't be afraid to push a bit more and outline things but make sure to show shadows around the hair, under the neck, and where the mask is!

Leave the houses, light house, sand, and sky blank for now. Focus on the main point for now and go through the lines you sketched with a light browns and go back and add darker colors. Don't be afraid to add gray to it as well!

For the hanging clothes feel free to use any colors you wish! I used blues for mine along with light blue for the window in the house.

Painting The Sand

Use these acrylic colors:
  • white
  • red(or pink)
  • brown
  • yellow
  • tan
have a lot of white pain for this!!
take white paint and mix it with the red to make a pink. now take a super small dot of brown and mix it with that. the lighter it is the better!

add a little more tan but not as much as the white! than take another dot of yellow if needed.
The result should look almost like a tan flesh skin tone or lighter. This will be painted over where the sand should be!

use a medium sized brush or a small and dab your brush in a small amount of water and lightly go over the surface.
Once that is dry go back over with the normal acrylic. It should have some dimension! If not feel free to add a tan/brown to the painting lightly to make it more like sand!

Painting The Sky

Now that the ground is semi done you can move on to the sky.

Paint I use:
  • medium blue
  • light blue
  • white
  • dark blue
Take the lightest blue you have and lightly paint the sky. Its alright if you get some closer to the land it can be covered up later!

Use the watercolor and take a small brush to pain white streaks in the sky. Once that dries use the same watercolor but with a dark blue and pain streaks into the sky similar to the white ones.

Go back through with a medium water color paint mixed with a bit of acrylic. Lightly cover the sky but leave it enough for the streaks to show through!

Now take white and create the clouds making them large and puffy! If you are unsatisfied with the sky wait till it dries and go over with more blues from light to dark till you are happy with the results!

Add white sparkles in the sky and near the statue similar to your reference image.

Painting The Land

Now you are almost finished! Go through and paint the grass that surrounds the Temple with a medium green water color than gradually darker the further away it is!

The lightest pain should be closer to the temple and darker further away!

Finished Product

Once you color the building with a yellow roof for the top building and a gray for the bottom. And a brown fence you are done!! The painting should be similar to what you looked at!

I hope this helps you good luck with making the Crystal Temple!

How to Draw Mettaton Ex

Drawing the fabulous robot that is Mettaton is quite a task for anyone, darling! But I am here to help you along and show you some mercy dear human! Here is my guide on how I draw Mettaton Ex from Undertale by Toby Fox.

Look Up Official Images

To draw Mettaton you need to know what he looks like. Look up official sprites or even concept art if you find any and jot down main features (Hair, body type, metal parts of his face, etc)

For example I used these sprites in my drawing to look at when I made art of him. These help me focus on how he should look in the end

Sketch Out The Body

Each art style is different from one another so there is no need to make him pixelated in your own drawing.

Find a method that fits you style wise and put it into action with how you want the body to look and how to make it. I use the circle method when drawing bodies using circles similar to these
I then go back and outline the body with the basic features (face, arms, legs, body, etc)

The Face

Now that the body is all finished or just basic enough to fix I start with the face. Mettaton has one eye showing with his hair covering part of his face. I take this to an advantage to not add another eye But if you feel like you must and erase it later that is totally fine!

I lightly sketch his nose, eye, and features that make him more robotic that the sprite shows (metal screws & patches).

I add in my little personal touch by giving him more of a feminine look since he is flamboyant and had a pink room before he was a robot.

This is why I gave him pink eyes also since the sprite has no distinct color. It also coordinates with his pink chest.

I used:
  • a simple hot pink and regular pink crayola colored pencil for his eye.
  • black crayola pencil for his hair, lips, eyebrows, and outlines.
  • a dark pen to line his dark hair closer to the face and for his eyeliner

The Body

Now that the head is at a decent point its time to add on the body! Same as the head lightly sketch out the body in pencil. Add on his heart, buttons, turning knob and speaker holes (like the sprite)
Now that its sketched on color it in (like above). Lightly shade his "skin" a grey color and put darker parts where there would be shadows like under the chin. Put lines around his neck to emphasize he is robotic and to go along with his arms.

Outline the body in the basic colors. Black for his suit and hot pink for the chest counsel and his boots.

Make sure his chest console is box looking on the side since he isn't human after all and his form before this was square

Shade in the outlines dark in some areas and lighter where the light is coming from. To make it seem more realistic along with making him seem like he is made of metal.

For the heart I made it seem more of a crystal than a realistic heart to keep it similar to his glitz and glamour life.

Finial Color

Now that the body is sketched out its ready to be completely shaded in!

I used the same basic crayola pencils again and went through and first lightly shaded it in than when more hard for darker areas. Go back and add in his fingers and make his hands seem like gloves.
Add gray lines that are shaped at an angle similar to his neck.

Outcome

Bravo darling you have the basics on how to draw Mettaton Ex!  Add in a few personal touches if you wish, I chose sparkles, and ta-da! Mettaton is here to dazzle the crowed!

I don't expect everyone's drawing to look like mine, I want you all to find your own style or even experiment with one's you have a grasp on like Disney's style for example! Have fun drawing Mettaton and don't be afraid to give him your own personal touch in your art!
